Booker winning novel
Modern day India is the setting from this debut novel.
A story of rags to riches, murder and class is all interwoven in this fairly simply styled novel.
I liked it but then felt…not that bothered and detached from the story.

The writing in this novel is faultless and gives the reader a wonderful sense of time and place.
London 1977, Hungarian immigrants who have fled to the UK during the war. Now the daughter who has no sense of history meets her Uncle Sandor.
Loosely based on a true character. This is a terrific read.

The survey from our book group was this is more enjoyed be the males than the females.
I found the book dull and uninteresting, perhaps I had high expectations from this author.
This isn’t to say its not a clever book, it’s certainly creative. He creates a new country and fills it with rules and myths.
What did annoy me was the constant use of words I don’t know the meaning of! Duh

First published in 1953. A sci-fi of the way government controls ‘the people’ by stopping them reading books and therefore having a creative cultured life by burning books.
Still fresh today. I read the edition with an interview by the author which was interesting to hear if he would have changed the book if he wanted to. Also his view that making abridged editions of novels is just as bad as burning books…go on him.
