Yes I know, she’s the Queen of Crime, yes she’s written loads and sold millions. Yes I paid £20 for this book! Lots of very short chapters, lots of gangster violence, plenty of clichéd phrases. And I don’t care or like any of the family. An editor should step up…

Another thriller that falls short. This felt like the author fancied doing some research in Sweden and got a good holiday on expenses. Surely there are enough Nordic crime novels around that we don’t need an English author to join in. Anyway the story hangs on a recovering female teenager who has been involved in a car crash and worse. I didn’t buy into the story or the credibility of the characters. Book group had mixed feelings and gave a 5/10 me 3

Shriver was a massive score for me when she wrote ‘Kevin’ but with this futuristic novel I didn’t enjoy it. The world has moved on and America has a Mexican president, the first language is no longer English. The Mandibles are a multi generation family, none of them likeable. The bottom falls out of the dollar when the rest of the world has had enough of the arrogant super power that is America. Their fortune goes over night. Things fall apart. (ever read The Queen and I by Sue Townsend? a very funny satire on a similar vein). Shriver is obviously having a pop at her country, she is of course an Anglophile so is’t allowed. BookPub score 4.75 me 3/10

Oh Dear, I know it has sold hugely and many people rate this book, but for me it is watering down and disrespecting atrocities of our past. We did discuss this strongly at BookPub group and collectively a 5/10 I think I’m being generous with 3.5
