Pay attention! I’ve given very few books such a high score of 9. We’ve read it in both book groups, BookPub (7/10) and Waterstones and the reactions have been so extreme, many say they couldn’t get into it, others thought it a fantastic novel. I’d recommend listening to it if you can. Don’t get hung up on the written text and the voice of the villages, you don’t need to understand it. Lanny is a young boy who may or may not have magical powers, when Dead Papa Toothwort returns to the sleepy English village things get a tad weird. Modern fiction at it’s finest.

“Take note, I don’t think I’ll read a better book for pure enjoyment than this in 2014
The story of Barrington, a seventy-four-year-old Caribbean man who moved to Hackney in the fifties, is preparing to come out of the closet to his wife and adult children.
So funny I laughed out loud many many times.

“First time I’ve read RF and mighty impressed.
He is a writer who’s style is rhythmic and a pleasure to read.
This is not plot driven although there is one which follows our protagonists journey beginning with the bank robbery carried out by his parents.
You should read this, I’ll read more by him. Our book group was keen too and gave it 7.7/10

“Great book!
In a similar style of Haruki Murakami but without the translation and for me better.
A Japanese young man leaves a remote coastal island and heads to the big city to find the father he never knew.
Very funny in places and gruesome in others, clever all the way through. READ IT NOW
