“I was so keen on this that I’ve been recommending it everyone I know, female readers seem less enamoured.
I listened to the audiobook narrated brilliantly by Michael Maloney.
Sinister tale of Engelby which begins with him at Uni and falling for a pretty girl, then we go back to Public school where things first started to go wrong. His nickname is inspired ‘Toilet’
Top title.

What a great book, brought to life in audio edition by Stan Pretty. Will I recommend Carey to others, yes.
The wonderful Butcher Bones and his dim brother Slow Bones. A tad slow paced but full of humour and descriptive prose.
The bit where Butcher gives the bugs and flies names using choice swear words is classic.

“Great book and a breath of fresh air. Light and funny.
A Yemen Sheikh wants to introduce salmon fishing into a wadi.
Take Yes Minister and mix it with Scoop and you’ll get the style.
Read whatever he writes next.

“A superb and accessible novel by this well respected and shortlisted author.
One might be pardoned for thinking this is like a ‘Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ but not for me, much better.
Thought to be loosely biographical, 13 year old lad in 80’s middle England, has to deal with family problems, gangs, girls, and having stammer.
Very funny in places, observational and thought provoking. Will take many grown men back to an awkward time.
I’ll read more by him, although I know the novels to be challenging.
