“This novel is loosely based on true events of some ghastly murders in 1800’s London.
Though this isn’t about a story describing ghastly doings, more of a weaving story dotting back and forth through time.
Set mainly in the Ratcliffe Highway (used by other authors) area of Wapping in East London the reader is treated to a great sense of time, place and atmosphere. I visited two of the pubs which are still serving beer, right on the banks of the Thames.
At times the author confuses us with dipping into some magical realism, some may like this, not for me. Perhaps he is giving us a metaphor for evil of humanity in the shape of the main character. Read it and feedback your take…
Good stuff and a first time novel too.

“The first in the DI Tom Thorne detective series.
I’ve read this for World Book Night, and handed it out around town.
Good London based thriller in which a killer is attempting to put women in to a coma state, mostly they die though. Why is he doing this and who is he? Enter Tom Thorne.
I’d probably read more of the series if I was into detective novels

“An interesting book by this debut novelist.
First hundred pages are hard work, so many words I needed to look up in the dictionary! Was this showing off?
The author works in journalism and I’m never keen on that style. BUT I’m so pleased to have persevered through because this turns into a black comedy and well worth reading.
Take a perfectionists flat in eastern block country, fill it with stylish decor and then ask your old Uni mate to look after it while you are away… outcome… read the book and enjoy.
Our book club gave this a healthy average of 5.5/10

“This one is a tad different. For a first novel I’m impressed.
It’s a delightfully odd story about the adult children of a pair of avant-garde performance artists, the ultimate dysfunctional American family.
The beginning is funny and light, the flashbacks to the art they create as a family are sideswipes at modern art.
As the novel goes on it becomes more serious, the kids, child A & B are older and feel used.
This was a likeable read, a mixture of Andy Warhol meets the Adams Family.
