“This shortlisted (Guardian first novel) story of a family farm in Yorkshire and how circumstances force the family to break up.
Second son, Richard, leaves the farm and his older brother, and ageing father to manage when he heads for a career and life change in London.
The brothers don’t deal well with this, but for me the story wasn’t that interesting, I became bored and couldn’t care so gave up on page 112.

“The biog of a homeless and chaotic person.
Working backwards from his death we discover what brought him to his life of alcohol and drugs, street life and abuse.
You also get the feeling of anxiety from the author who dips into this world.
Worth reading.

Recommended and lent to me by a trusted source… The stock manager for Dublin City libraries.
A hugely absorbing and heart-warming coming of age novel.
It all happens over one summer in Washington’s Puget Sound when Miles discovers a giant squid.
It’ll mess with you emotionally. Lovely.

Aimed at teenagers, but I’m not going to be categorised.
This is the first of three featuring grumpy old Mr Fogarty, Henry and Pyrgus Malvae.
I don’t know why I was surprised by teen fict, but the bit where Henry says ‘Dad, are you having an affair with your secretary?’ Dad’ ‘No Son, your Mother is’ Wonderful stuff.
