“Short listed for the Booker prize, but didn’t win.
A cleverly constructed and insightful novel. Set in the Highlands of Scotland in a crofting village where families live off the land and times are tough. They get even tougher when the local bully gets himself elected as policeman.
The author tells the story to begin with a series of newspaper reports, so authentic you’d be unsure if this is non fiction. Anyway, read on and what unfolds is a depressing tale.
A good choice for a book group to debate which ours did. Book Club scored it at 6.75/10 and my score 7/10

Score 7/10

“A very good British thriller. A debut novel too.
How is it some thrillers hit the spot and others don’t? This one does…a hit and run results in the death of a young child. Haunted with guilt our protagonist does what you’d expect in real life, she packs her bags and runs away to start a new life.
Full of brooding atmosphere, I’m recommending this one. 7.5/10

“If you didn’t read The End of Mr Y then you should!
This doesn’t connect at all and stands alone as a novel.
As a writer she has an easy style which makes the pages flow and keeps you wanting to read on.
We read this as a book club novel and had lots to discuss and debate.
BC scored 5.6/10 I liked it more than most and gave it a 7/10

“An early Dave Robicheaux novel and it won him an Edgar award.
In my view this is his best series, if you wanted to read them in order all the better but I haven’t and it matters not.
A well done thriller with lots of action and good writing. 7/10
