“I know this won a CWA new dagger award but I felt it tried too hard, falling between stories and failing all around.
There is a serial killer on the loose in New Orleans 1919, is he real or what? We also have intertwined with the story a young Louis Armstrong, disgraced ex cop/ex con, unpopular chief detective…
I couldn’t be bothered to finish the book 3/10

“Here’s a breath of fresh air into the arena. Funny, tender and crafted, certainly inventive.
I’d like to see/read more of his, and wouldn’t it be good for some of the characters to appear in future books.
Take small island in the pacific which is due to expire, add a straight out of military combat burnt out soldier in the role as British colonial sergeant. He befriends a comic book reading teenager and they embark on creating Tigerman.
If you ever get a chance to see Nick Harkaway giving a talk or reading do grab the opportunity, he is a real gent and passionate about books and reading, plus he is an excellent author. 8/10

“Our New Yorker runs away from a broken relationship taking up an offer of a rather odd job in Dubai. We follow him through this and read via the first person. Where it gets clever is the constant internal debates he has with himself, writing imaginary emails in his head he’ll never send.
Listed in the long list of the Booker, I liked it and give it a 7/10, our book group scored it 7.75/10

“Here is a fine debut novel, he has gone on to write plenty more but this as a first novel is remarkable.
If all publishers had the balls to take on something new and different the literary world would be a far better place.
Mitchell has created a host of characters all of which show a terrific skill of writing, not all of it comes together or is meant too.
