“Here’s an interesting way to read a book, start with the audiobook and then halfway through switch to the pages!
Perhaps Faulks is writing a ‘state of the nation’ novel. Intentionally writing character via stereotypes. I found this dull and disappointing. Not one I’ll be recommending.

“Another Booker long listed title…I’m giving up on literature if there is no plot or point!
Based in San Paulo, Brazil. A poor kid is picked up and given the chance of high living, of course he never really fits in.
Nothing happened and I don’t care.
I really do need a good book soon!

“Debut novel by Canadian raised in Ireland. A foreign overseas journalist, this long listed Booker novel and our latest book club read.
It took far too long to read for a 275 page book, and why did I bother, I knew after 50 pages I should have given up. It didn’t get any more interesting, I couldn’t care less about the characters or remember them.
A pointless book which felt like the author showing us how cold journalists are, sorry Ed. Do better next time. Our group gave it an average score of 4/10.

“I read this when too many people recommended it to me. Also once the hype had died down. Oh and I was due to meet and introduce the author!
So, the novel. I grew to like it more and more as I read further in.
I became engrossed in the characters who lived with me well after I’d finished the book.
Must read his new one soon. Oh, and a very nice person.
