“This is a translation from a French Canadian author and not done very well.
This is a simple story of a neighbourhood coming together in a crisis. It felt as if the author had an idea and then tried to write a book around it, sadly the publisher thought it was a good idea too.
Our book group gave it a generous 3.75/10 I’m less inclined with a lowly 2/10

“A what if novel – Churchill doesn’t stand up and become prime minister and The British form a alliance with Germany to avoid being invaded. Good concept but not truly original.
I think if it hadn’t been our book club read I 1/ wouldn’t have picked it up. 2/ finished it even if I had.
Not enough of a page turner to hold my interest. Our book club gave it 5/10

“Faulks is back on form with this his latest novel, well actually 5 short stories.
These stories cover the lives of five different people. Each very different, some more memorable and enjoyable than others.
Our bookclub scored this at 5.5/10 and voted the first story their favorite

“A gentle, wry and amusing book which is a little like a history lesson of the last hundred years told as an Ealing comedy.
Do buy and read this book. Our book club also found it likeable and gave it 6.5/10
