“Begins very well with a mass suicide (or is it?) by a secret sect.
We then drift off to the relationship of the title.
I never felt in touch with these two unlikely lovers.

“Long listed and likely favourite for the Booker, but didn’t make it to the shortlist.
Historical Dutch/Japanese novel which I’d eagerly awaited and chosen by our book group.
First impression was a disappointment, but perhaps I’ve under scored it?

“First novel and very interesting piece of work.
It has the feeling of unease all the way through, which is a trick few pull off without laying it on thickly.
So what was true and what wasn’t? Nevis is 15 and lives with his father alone from the age of 4…in a transit type van. He has little experience or interaction with other people. He develops unhealthy love for his father.
Terrific read.

“Based on the daring feat of Philippe Petit who walked a tightrope between the twin towers NYC.
This though is far more complex than that. A novel that doesn’t have a plot, more a collection of characters and an event. Very interesting how one of the characters describes the feat as ‘Living Art’ clever this author.
