“Here is a fine debut novel, he has gone on to write plenty more but this as a first novel is remarkable.
If all publishers had the balls to take on something new and different the literary world would be a far better place.
Mitchell has created a host of characters all of which show a terrific skill of writing, not all of it comes together or is meant too.

“There is a reason why books get called classics, it’s because there is something about the writing or the novel which stands the test of time, this does it with some aplomb.
Cannery Row is more about 40’s America and everyday people in a rough area on the coast of California.
What Steinbeck does is create larger than life characters who you quickly warm to, Mack and Doc are brilliant. Some really lovely moments and situations. Unlike some other work by him I didn’t feel depressed by American life portrayed of the era.

“I’m glad I read this debut prize winning novel.
Here Filer creates the voice of Matt who after the death of his brother is plagued with mental illness, at times it is hugely sad, but never depressing, other times light and funny.
Isn’t it good when the judges of a literary prize are bold and choose something different and refreshingly written. I wonder what his next book will be like?

“This is the latest novel of Granta listed novelist.
A stand alone novel and probably a good job.
The best part of this is the authors character of Gil Martins, the plot I struggled with which revolves around evangelical religion and the wrath of God.
