“The main character and his voice annoyed me, I just couldn’t like him, perhaps this is how it is intended. I expected better, this was shortlisted and tipped to win the Booker (it didn’t).
Within a few days a communal village set around the middle ages falls apart. Also read as our book club and the group scored it 5.75/10

“A sort of mystery…
A world of gypsies is exposed when a missing girls father employs a detective who is joint protagonist with a gypsy boy, they tell the story.
Nothing wrong with this story, writing is ok, I just couldn’t maintain interest or enthusiasm easily.

“A crackingly well constructed mystery thriller.
Set on the island of Lewis in the Scottish Outer Hebrides. A body is discovered preserved by the peat, the main suspect is an elderly man with dementia.
It is the middle book of a trilogy (I didn’t know this and it is easily a stand alone novel).

“My first novel by this literary American author.
It is a good one to go for and I’ll go away and read more because of this.
Four characters are involved but Miles Heller is the main one. He has dropped out after a family tragedy, and it’s how his life comes back through his love of a under age girl, If the writing wasn’t so go and the novel so well constructed this under age relationship would jar and the book would fall apart, so great credit to the author.
