Our newest read in the book group, jeez we need to pick better books.
Life in an advertising agency in Chicago and billed as very funny, but actually very dull.
I should have given up after 50 pages. Our group gave it an average of 3.5 too

Score 3.5/10

Translated from a series of books which are unfinished.
The first two parts are about the fleeing from Paris, all types are running away to hopeful safety. Part two and now we are in German occupation of France. What is key here is that Irene wrote this whilst it was happening, she couldn’t know how the war was to turn out or if France would recover.
Sadly she never did, she dies later in a concentration camp, year and years later her family publish the books.
My book group thought more of this than I did and the average was 6.5/10

Score 5/10

A very interesting read, light but thought provoking.
I felt a bit let down when loose ends were not tied up. A strange book and very different.
A mundane accident happens and our hero(?) spends all his money re-enacting the event, things get madder and madder. Naz is a great character and what happens to him!?.
Watch this author. A healthy score of 8/10.

“Winner of the Costa Award.
Canada 1865. What the author does well is give a vision of this frozen setting with splendid vividness.
Took me to long to read it which makes me think it’s not as good as everyone says it is.
